Free writing is a technique where selected words are taken at random and sentences are constructed around these words with as little thought as possible going into where the sentences are leading.
Free writing provides writers who may be having trouble getting started each day with a writing limbering up exercise having rules specific enough to get the process started but flexible enough to be useful as an introduction to all sorts of writing day; fiction, non-fiction, romance, mystery, murder or whatever.
It helps the mind flow freely and is a better method first thing in the morning than others sometimes used by writers - getting drunk, for example!
Sometimes, when I have a list of topics to write about and I am feeling particularly uninspired - a not infrequent occurrence - I use free writing with speech recognition software. As I speak, the sentences are transcribed onto the page. It’s important to keep an eye on what the software thinks I’m saying but generally it does a good job.
A good way of selecting free writing words is to take a random page from any book and a predetermined random line and word. Simply make a sentence with the selected words and then add another one straight after. Keep going for five minutes and you’ve been free writing.
I hope this helps.
Do you find free writing works for you? I’d love to know below in the comments
Bye for now
