Travel writing is informative, fun to read and fun to write. It’s also fairly easy to get started with because there are no complicated plots to work out, relationships to resolve or scenarios to develop.
These days, I find that a photo really lifts a page, whether I am writing a fictional story or a general purpose article and I take my trusty digital camera almost everywhere I go. Often I use only small parts of a snapshot once I have identified a section that is in some way relevant to the article or story I am writing. Usually, I had no idea about the article when I took the photograph so, when I am out in the field, it is usually worth snapping almost everything in sight just in case.
Of course, with travel writing, photography is vital. There is little point in writing beautifully about a landscape when a photo will do the job much more quickly and informatively.
However, in my travel writing, I like to look for some angle or mini story that adds interest to the pictures. Even a few personal remarks are usually enough to lift the article above the level where it just looks like an advertising feature for the local hotels.
So, if you are thinking about doing some writing as a hobby or even as a career and are not sure where to start, grab your digital camera and venture forth, snapping as you go. When you return to your laptop, record what you have found in a blog and you are on your way
Good luck!
Bye for now
Rob
