Is sudden fiction just flash fiction that suddenly gets a bit longer?

Previously, I wrote how I loved writing flash fiction because it can be written in a reasonably short space of time in response to an idea that suddenly crosses my mind which is highly appropriate because another name for flash fiction is ’sudden fiction’.

Sudden fiction is sometimes argued to be fiction that can be read at one sitting like flash fiction but some people claim that the number of words in the story is more likely to be 1000 or more rather than around 750.

Perhaps also sudden fiction can be defined as flash fiction that is still short and intense but which has overrun a little bit beyond what can be considered as a flash.

One of my favourite science fiction character creations is called the President of Earth. He’s a bit of an old duffer and tends to make World decisions based on whether it will delay him getting out onto the golf course but he is a character for whom I have affection.

In my sudden fiction story ‘In THEIR eyes YOU are just compost‘, the plot of the fictional story was clear in my mind until I got to the end but then a little bit of a twist suggested itself to me and this took up another 280 words which put the word count to about 1100.

Perhaps you could argue that sudden fiction is flash fiction which is suddenly extended by a nice twist at the end :-)

Flash fiction or sudden fiction? I leave the decision to you and would love to receive your opinion below.

Bye for now

Writing flash fiction brings love, romance and adventure for Rob Hopcott

I love writing flash fiction, which I take to be fictional stories of about  750 words.

A flash fiction story fits nicely into a short length of writing time and enables me to finish the short tale in under a day. I often like to wait a day and publish my free online flash fiction stories the day after which gives me a second look and time to do some last minute editing.

Flash fiction ideas, for me, often start with a visual observation, a sudden taste or a smell that triggers off an interesting train of thought or imaginary adventure. Since I’m very much a butterfly brain, such brain lurch episodes often occur in the course of my average day, especially if I’m travelling or not doing anything in particular to occupy my mind.

I love romantic moments. A lady glances across the railway carriage at me. I look in through the window of a restaurant at a couple holding hands - who are obviously feeling tense. Or a message has been left poking out of a letterbox of the front door of a deserted house across the road.

Passing a theatre entrance in a small provincial town (see photo) triggered the flash fiction story Nightmare to romance at the comedy club - a short flash fiction romantic story about life as a stand up comedian.

Flash fiction makes my life so much more exciting because it gives significance to so many passing and otherwise perhaps trivial moments. I love it.

Once the flash fiction has been written, there is the fun of choosing an appropriate photograph to match the story because a photo lifts the page so beautifully.

So I say to flash fiction ‘Thanks, for giving me so much pleasure and I will be back to taste your delights again soon!’

What do you think? I’d love to know :-)

Bye for now
